Under 19 Nationals January 2019 Chaperone

Essential Criteria

• Must be available to travel with the team to Cairns around 19th -25th January, 2019

• Must be over the age of 25 years.

• Must hold (at minimum) a current Drivers Licence.

• Must sign a Tas UWH Players And Team Management Contract

• Must hold a current Working with Children card.

• Must be confident to drive the team in a 12 seater or similar vehicle (normal drivers licence)

• Oversee and assist their U19 team for the duration of the tournament.

• The chaperone will be available to players at all times.

• If the chaperone needs to be absent for any reason they need to hand the responsibility to another approved official, eg coach or manager who will then be available till the chaperone returns.

Accommodation and Food

• Teams are expected to be housed in self-contained accommodation.

• The Chaperone will oversee the purchasing and cooking of meals for the team.

• Players need to have a healthy diet, which is appropriate for competition.

• It is expected that all meals and snacks (other than organised social events) will be cooked on site, rather than the more expensive option of eating out

• The chaperone will be the first port of call for sick players.

• Depending on the urgency for treatment the chaperone may either call an ambulance, or drive and get the player to hospital and then notify the manager to come and provide assistance, OR if it is a more minor problem then the manger will be called and come and see the player and organise what treatment is necessary.

• The chaperone is responsible for overseeing the players have their gear in top form.

• This means mostly buying, or organising someone else to buy, the team paint and making sure the bats are painted as needed. It will also at times mean helping repairing fins, masks etc. .

• It also means reminding players that they need to be responsible for packing all their gear, and for rushing back and getting it when they forget it

Washing

• The chaperone is responsible for facilitating the players doing their washing as needed, and for making sure the players have correct uniform, clean and neat for opening and closing ceremonies.

Behaviour

• The chaperone is the first to supervise, and advise players on correct behaviour. Rowdy, inappropriate or unbecoming behaviour is not to be tolerated and players, who sometimes forget and make the wrong choices, need to be reminded what is appropriate when they are representing their State. Repeated unacceptable behaviour will be dealt with by the manager and coaches. Final party • This is often a challenging night for the chaperones as the players are very excited and once again can make some really bad decisions. The expectation is that no U18 player will drink alcohol and no over 18-year-old player will supply the alcohol to them. Players will be remined of this expectation by the manager on the final day, and if they still make the wrong decision they will be taken home immediately from the party.

• The other duty of the chaperone is to make sure that the U18 year old players do not leave the party venue until the team leaves as a group, and that the players behaviour, regardless of age, whilst at the party is appropriate.

Alcohol and chaperone’s responsibility • Tasmanian Underwater Hockey expects that chaperones will not drink alcohol for the duration of their role

Finally, the Chaperone is an integral part of the team.

They keep the ship running so to speak.

It is a very busy role, but a very rewarding one.
