Dear UWH players
Last Monday was the first day of the Schools comp and
there were about 30 new players from 12-17 years of age.
Next Monday (23 March) could all coaches and experienced
players be at the pool by 7.15pm so that we can discuss the nights training
& games? As each new player is at a different level of experience and
skill, it will be important to remain flexible with expectaions. Some new
players will be ready to help put the walls in, others will need to relearn how
to get to the bottom of the pool and most will be somewhere in between.
The key things are:
- 4
courts will be set up, 2 normal pennant courts and two courts sideways at the
gym end
- It
would be great if each experienced player could help a new player to correctly
fit their gear, including defogging masks, getting a proper seal and entering
the water with them at the start of the night – basically a buddy system.
- If
you have a friend from your school, stay with them for the first few minutes.
Otherwise grab somebody you don’t know and give them a hand.
- Once
in the water, we will do a refresh in groups of 5; just basic stuff like pull
downs, pushing the puck, flicking and curling – adjust according to ability.
- There
may be some more new come-and-tryers coming along– they will be moved to the
smaller court closest to the entrance where they will be run through the basics
before finishing with a game (similar to last week)
- The
other three courts will have games from the start. As only a couple of schools
can form a team, we need to amalgamate schools. We are very keen to have a
balanced competition so please guys accept that we need you to help bolster the
weaker teams.
- Senior
pennant players will be in each pool to help coordinate the games, referee and
coach.
We want to encourage new players to join in and play, so
by all mean go down and get the puck but then wait for a new player to come
down and pass it to them. We do not want the new players to be intimidated and
leave UWH because they can’t get the puck.
