Hi Angus,
I’m a visual learner and I’m trying to train myself to be a better ref
Complaints were that I was missing the obstruction
So I’ve looked up examples
http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=underwater+hockey+obstruction&qpvt=under+water+hockey+obstruction&FORM=VDRE#view=detail&mid=7D29FFD3C897AA43B98C7D29FFD3C897AA43B98C
Here’s one. First defending touch is on the puck
But he’s leaning in and interfering with the swim. Is that why it’s obstruction?

Juliet

Subject: [Uwh-announce] Rule of the week- Regardless of what you think of the call..........

Ok,
So if you are wondering why I'm starting the email with the way I normally finish rule of the week, its because we need to address a growing problem of backchat to referees.

Tonight we suspended a player for a week for an incident where the backchat crossed the line. The rules are very clear as are the TUHA by laws. Only the captain or vice captain should be talking to the refs. And nobody should be abusing, intimidating or threatening a referee. The last thing we want to do is suspend players, and the best way to avoid this, is to not break the rules in the first place.

We are lucky, as most other states in Australia don't have any referees at all. The last thing we want is to get to a point where we don't have them either. So we need to respect them, and their calls, even if the call is askew, or we risk people refusing to referee- this is already happening now.

Now all refs will admit that they have a bad night. Its unavoidable. TUHA are starting some work to achieve consistency in how games are reffed. So in the meantime, cut the red hats some slack.

So, see you all poolside and...........

As always:
Regardless of what you think of the call, it’s what it is. Live with it, and move on.

See you all poolside!
