Hi all,

I've decided to give an overview of the entire rules of hockey. Firstly, yes there are rules, which are applied depending on skill level, grade and experience, where "bending" rules is allowed to encourage skills development and improved knowledge.
The rules can be found here:

Now if you are new to the game, or haven't checked the rules out lately, have a gander, and don't panic! There's a lot of them, and some can get pretty technical at times, but that's for the referees to decide and apply. All you have to do is read them, get a handle of what you can, and more importantly, can't do, and then go out and play to your heart's content.

When speaking about what you can't do, there's a great summary table in there that gives you an idea of exactly how long you can have a rest next to the deck ref for a given infringement. This is a great table, because it tells you EXACTLY how long your team has to battle with one less player for, and stare you down if a goal is scored against you.

I'd recommend all players who haven't read the rules recently (as in the last 2 years) go and read them. I was having arguments about serious and specific calls with NZ referees, who were using rules that weren't that old, but the recent changes on some points are significant. The most obvious ones are what does and does not constitute a goal.

So, on that note, get busy, and make sure you make the new teams in your grade welcome.

PS. I think the only kickout last week was the president (professional yet technical foul). Golf claps all round! For him, and well done to the rest of you. A great start to the year!

As always:
Regardless of what you think of the call, it's what it is. Live with it, and move on.

See you all poolside!
