G’day Puckers,
Well, The spectre of unsportsmanlike behaviour has arisen once again. So, you ask, what’s happening this week?
This one is a little different. It’s more about general fair play, and playing according to your opposition. We have a mixed comp, in regard to gender, age and skill set. Although there are three grades, we do have a varied skill level in each grade. I know, as I get reminded each and every week by the opposition where my skill set lies-generally alongside the puck in their tray after they've beaten me yet again.
So where am I taking this? Well, if you are built like the proverbial brick dunny, is there really any advantage in swatting that new junior player who weighs less than a feather and is built like a toothpick? Not really. All you do is demoralise them (and crush them in some instances) and they soon tire of being repeatedly crushed like an aluminium can at a scout hall. And then they stop playing.
So here is where the unsportsmanlike concept steps in.
All the Guild refs have my blessing to give out warnings and kick outs for any undue rough play under the banner of unsportsmanlike play. Because that's exactly what it is. UWH is supposed to be non contact, and if players are being injured (which they are) or feeling like giving up (which they are) or are really peeved that rough play isn't being called (which it isn't) then we aren't having any fun. And that just isn't right.
As always:
Regardless of what you think of the call, it’s what it is. Live with it, and move on.
See you all poolside!
