G'day all,
Ahhh yes, this old chestnut. Its ugly in every way, except the hand signal for it-which sums up the infringement beautifully.
Unsportsmanlike behaviour covers a broad range of infringements, from delaying the game to actively braining somebody. Hence the initial penalties range from a caution, to instant game dismissal. A few calls are discretionary, but most will earn you a non negotiable rest beside with the deck ref.
I won't go into the details of dangerous play that will draw this call, as it will just give you ideas on ways to nail your opponent, and that's not what hockey is about. OK, just one. An example might be handling another player or getting agro on the surface with another player. They might be retaliation, but that's irrelevant. Let the refs get on with the job of pinging the fouls, without having to sin bin you for retaliation as well.
This includes any behaviour towards the refs. More importantly, the deck ref, affectionately known as "the scorer" in our comp. In reality, the deck ref has control of the game, and the last word when it comes to any decisions and are able to ping you for a range of infringements (see the inaugural rule of the week-subbing). So treat them with just as much respect as the in water refs.
And want to know how to earn yourself an instant 5 minute rest with little effort, whilst your team burst a lung covering your position? Remove the puck from the goal tray after a goal is scored. It is downright dirty and disrespectful. Trust me, most if not all guild refs will come down on you like a tonne of bricks for this.
On a high note, tonight is the last night before finals. Good luck to those teams who are in the finals, and an extra boost for those teams that are on a knife edge and need a win to get in. This will be the last rule of the week for this pennant, but it'll be back with vigour next pennant. I'll apologise now for the imminent barrage of emails regarding the Nationals in January. There will be a few, so bear with us.
As always:
Regardless of what you think of the call, it’s what it is. Live with it, and move on.
See you all poolside
