G'day all,
I know I promised that I wasn't going to do any more "Rule of the week" for this pennant, but I received an email from a certain team that could not be ignored. I will preface it with the caveat that I do not condone any of the sledging (Bob, I do not agree with the comments below! They are jealous of your superior skills). Also, I'll need to chat with the Under 15's........unless the Grizzlies have failed to interpret the rule correctly!
See you all poolside.
Angus, Chief referee.
Dear Angus,
It has come to the attention of the Grizzlies that many of your "Rules
of the Week" seem to originate from games involving our good selves.
For example, this weeks treatise on "Dangerous Play" comes just days
after our own Crusty Bradford had his cheekbone flayed open by a
wayward SOS delivered missile. Russ' great skill in deflecting a puck
that was travelling safely past him into a self-inflicted headshot was
rightly not rewarded with a free puck, although we wish Dr McCartney
had stitched it up for him straight away rather than first harassing
our now depleted backline for the rest of the game while Russ was
bleeding on pool deck.
Similarly, your double feature on "Holding the wall" and "Corner rule"
came hot on the heels of a fraught night at the pool for us. Despite
the widespread belief in certain circles that we are unaware of any
rules existing for this game, Referee Maxwell pinged a fellow C-Grader
for holding the wall and was in the process of explaining the
intricacies of the rule when he had to invoke rule 6.3 and give the
player some time to reflect on his choice of words (which tied in
nicely with your article on Escalating Calls). It was interesting to
see that this same player was pinged again this week for the same
holding offence, but without the need for an additional penalty, so it
would seem that Rohan is only getting some of your emails about rules
and behaviour.
With the Corner Rule, those pesky Juniors in C Grade have an awful
habit of pushing the puck immediately into a defensive corner and then
have the unrealistic expectation that us Grizzlies are going to go and
get it out for them. You don't get physiques like ours by chasing the
puck unnecessarily and we are quite content to wait for the Juniors to
get their own puck out of the corner and bring it to us. It may have
come as a surprise to them that they can't keep taking it back into
the corner and take turns keeping it there, the vaguely disinterested
referee was also unaware of the rule despite us explaining it to him
and hopefully he benefitted from the professional development your
article provided.
The Grizzlies would like to thank you for recognising and correcting
what has been 20+ years of victimisation of us at the hands of the
refs. We await your special edition on "C-Grade Rules", especially
the variation to the obstruction rule (its not obstruction if you
can't bend to get out of the way); tactical use of holding to prevent
young fit things scooting away; permitted use of the shoulder in
initiating a tackle; and (our personal favourite), if Bob's got the
puck then he must have fouled someone to get it. Can you please make
sure Simon and Pud get a copy of these as they keep reffing us in
finals and seem unaware of the finer points of C Grade play.
Kind regards,
The Grizzlies From Hell
