may or may not be aware that there is currently underway a video
project to produce short videos that will hopefully assist all our
players
(even some of the old ones who have been playing for decades!) to
better understand some of the finer points of the rules of our game.
These ‘educational’ videos will be aimed at players in general, but
hopefully will also be of use in future reffing courses
and for those who are still learning the art of reffing without having
yet done any formal training. There are some fouls in our sport (e.g.
obstructions and stick infringements being classic examples) for which
many refs find difficult to make confident
calls, largely because of uncertainty about ‘the fine line’ between it
being a foul or almost-a-foul. In these videos, to be uploaded and made
accessible through our TUHA website and TUHA Facebook, we plan to
explain the fouls in as simple but complete ways
as possible. This will done through a combination of expert refs
explaining and acting-out the fouls above water, some footage of fouls
being acted-out in slow-mo underwater, and also examples from real game
footage. The videos will also include demonstration
of the relevant reffing signal for each type of foul. We also plan to
do one video explaining best practice for refs when there are 3 in-water
refs and best practice for 2 in-water refs.

<span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";">Some
of you may have noticed Craig Proctor in the water filming games at
various times over recent weeks. He is accumulating good examples of
fouls
to add to those already in-hand from other games footage. So, if you
have been wondering why he’s been doing that, now you know. Many thanks
to our refs and senior players who have already been assisting Craig in
this project, but it’s likely we’ll be tapping
other refs and players on the shoulder to help out in the coming weeks.
If you have skills in this type of video production and are keen to
help out, Craig would love to hear from you. The first of the 3-5
minute long videos are hopefully not too far off from
‘release’, but there is still more out-of-water and in-water filming to
be done.

we get to the stage of selecting fouls from real games as examples,
Craig will be in touch with the players featured in the footage to make
sure we have approval from them for the footage to be used. EVERYONE
commits fouls at some stage, most often unintentionally in the thick of
play. We are hoping that you will agree to any fouls captured on film to
be used in this project, for the better understanding
of all our players, but hopefully for the benefit of everyone out there in
underwater hockey land who may end up watching these video resources.
You can look upon it as us asking you to make a worthy contribution to
our wonderful sport........ but that’s not to
say we want you to intentionally commit fouls in games when Craig is
filming!
