This year has been challenging in many ways.

Since last AGM players from the TUHA have been involved with several championships with players going overseas twice as well as interstate.

The teams have done very well with the support of the team managers, coaches and chaperones. I would like to thank all the volunteers who put time in to help develop the players and hence our sport. The under 19’s did very well at the worlds in Holland given they had to play in a narrower court that did not suite their game plan and the Masters put up a valiant fight. The juniors were again invited to New Zealand to play in the schools championships. The trip was a success as not only did they win nearly every game, they had a great time exploring the areas around Rotorua and supporting our cousins on the Eastern Isles. The next major event was the Nationals in Perth where all teams did us proud. The under 19’s won Gold and our development squad achieved bronze. The Women won gold in a very close championship. The men’s team did well and are showing great promise for the future. Again all this would not be possible without the input from the coaches, managers and most importantly the players.

I cannot name you all but I do thank Ian, Steve, Dave, Nick and Sandra as well as Pieter and Simon for refereeing at events. Your efforts are appreciated.

The intense coaching and competition experience our juniors are getting has meant that they are developing rapidly. A lot of them are giving the older players in A grade a hard time. The women’s and men’s squads are also improving with each competition and it may be time for a re-think about the structure of our competition. Do we try to instigate a super-league for the development of the state teams? Do we encourage the older, not quite so elite players (myself included) to move to B grade? With all the junior players moving up so rapidly it has left B and C grade short of players.

We need to get the C grade back up to 8 teams as with B grade. All players have a responsibility to do this. Recruitment is an ongoing issue for us as our numbers are slowly declining. I urge you to get out there in your schools, workplaces and recreational clubs and try to get a few more people playing! This issue is too important to leave to the committee only.

The continued success of the schools competition is helping but we need to retain the players and attract the more mature players as well. To this end the committee has applied for and been given a grant to help purchase sets of equipment from Sport and Recreation Tasmania (they pay half and we the other half). The money will purchase about 20 sets of gear that will be available for new players to use to see if they will enjoy the sport. All members will have to help look after this equipment and make sure it is returned as this is for the benefit of all of us.

We have had to raise the entry fee and membership fees to keep up with rising pool hire costs, let alone the maintenance costs of our current equipment. Even after the increases we made a loss in the first two playing months of between $200 and $300 dollars. There are many reasons for this and we have had to cut the pool hire slightly to meet costs. The other development is that the front desk closes at 8:45pm so players coming in for the last game may not be charged. I encourage you all to be honest and pay Christian at our desk if you come in late. If you do not then you are only ripping yourself off as the club will have extra bills to pay and less for equipment purchase and maintenance.

On a more pleasant note the upcoming Southern Hemisphere championships are meaning that the players are training hard still. Then we have the trip to New Zealand again for the schools competition and our own Nationals event here in Hobart in January 2013. So another very busy year is ahead and if the smiles on the players are anything to go buy it will be a good year for our sport.

We have already started to get organised for the nationals and I thank those that have offered or are already helping. We do need more volunteers to help man the desks, referee or video games. The more volunteers we have the less work it will be for everyone. Please email me if you can help in any way (mark.lewis@csiro.au).

Have fun and enjoy this great sport of ours.

Sincerely

Mark Lewis

Mark Lewis

President

Tasmanian Underwater Hockey

Mob: 0407 879 759
